It may or may not have escaped your notice, but midsize trucks are becoming a bit of a thing again. They're not in danger of threatening the all-conquering success of full-size trucks across North America anytime soon, but we're definitely-starting to appreciate a size of truck most of the rest of the world accepts as the norm. It could be argued Ford doesn’t need a midsize pickup truck, considering the incredible success and popularity of the F-Series Ford trucks over many decades. However, Ford is now back in the midsize truck segment with an all-new version of the Ranger. This 2019 Ford Ranger is a completely new model and shares nothing other than its name with the last Ford Ranger to be offered here in Canada. So, let's take a close look at the all-new 2019 Ford Ranger models and specifications.
2019 Ford Ranger
Ford has kept things nice and simple to start off with as this all-new Ranger is available in three distinct trim levels. The first of these is the entry level Ranger XL, the middle trim is the XLT, and the top-of-the-range model is the Lariat. These trim levels ought to be seen as the starting point for specifications though, as there's a wider range of options and appearance packages for the Ranger than many of its rivals offer.
To begin with, all models feature the same powertrain, and it’s seriously a good one. The 2.3-litre turbo-four wouldn’t be out of place in some full-size light-duty models as it produces 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque, which is then sent to all four wheels through Ford's outstanding 10-speed automatic transmission.
With the optional towing package, the 2019 Ford Ranger is rated to tow as much as 7,500 pounds (when properly equipped). But whatever you do with your Ranger, the engine appears to take it all in its stride with plenty left in reserve much of the time.
Standard features of the entry-level XL include air conditioning, automatic emergency braking, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker AM/FM audio system with a single USB port. Optional features include front and rear parking sensors. Features such as Ford MyKey and some advanced safety tech are available options for the XL.
A lot of features optional for the XL are standard with the XLT. These include: a lane-keeping system, forward and reverse sensing systems, automatic high beams, cruise control, and power mirrors. Upgrades you might want to consider include an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that's Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible, and adaptive cruise control.
The Lariat gets the 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainments system standard, but it also ups the luxury ante with keyless ignition, LED headlights, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, and 8-way power driver and passenger heated seats with power lumbar support.
